The everyday working cowboy in Arizona was a far different character than the popular Hollywood version or even the modern Rodeo cowboys.
Although highly skilled in the dangerous work of handling cattle and horses that ran virtually wild on vast open ranges, he was still considered common labor and one of the lowest rungs on the social ladder.
Few had much, if any, formal education. Their ages ran from 14 to 30. So did their wages … in dollars per month.
