The Mexican cowboy was a blended mixture of the old Spanish Colonial Vaquero and the late 1800 American cowboy and he was unique. He represented the transition from the old Spanish methods to the more modern American methods when it came to cattle ranching and the handling of livestock on the open range. He lost much of his Vaquero tradition and yet never fully gave in to the more modern American ways. Almost any old time cowboy would admit the average Mexican cowboy could out ride and out rope even good American cowboy. At the same time, a Mexican cowboy would admit the old time Spanish Vaqueros could out ride and out rope a Mexican cowboy. Why and how did this transition occur? What were some of the differences? Were their tools different? Were their methods different?
